Most "free" video editors are demos with export handcuffs. DaVinci Resolve is the opposite: Blackmagic ships a full Edit, Color, Fusion, and Fairlight suite at $0, then sells Studio as a $295 perpetual license for the Neural Engine, advanced noise reduction, higher frame rates, and resolutions beyond UHD.

We cut a 12-minute documentary, a product reel, and a YouTube weekly on free Resolve, then unlocked Studio for Magic Mask and temporal NR on a noisy interview A-cam. The free tier is not charityware — it is a recruitment funnel into a colorist's ecosystem, and it works.

Installed Resolve 20.2 on a Ryzen 9 + 64GB + RTX 4070 Windows box and an M2 Max MacBook Pro 32GB, then finished real deliveries — not sample timelines.

Color, first. The Color page is why Resolve became unavoidable. Node graphs, qualifiers, and tracking are production-grade.

Price honesty, second. Free has no watermark. Studio is $295 once — not $55+/mo Creative Cloud. For freelancers, that math still wins in 2026.

All-in-one, third. Leaving for After Effects or Audition is optional for many jobs. Fusion and Fairlight are deep enough to finish.

The free version edits and grades for real. Studio is what you buy when the Neural Engine starts saving hours.
